33rd District News: House Page Program, Sales Tax Holiday, and More!

Dear Friends,

I would like to remind you of the upcoming annual sales tax holiday, which will be taking place this weekend, Friday, August 5th to Sunday, August 7th.

During the sales tax holiday period, consumers can purchase qualifying school supplies, clothing, footwear, hurricane and emergency preparedness items, and Energy Star™ and WaterSense™ products without paying sales tax. This includes qualifying items purchased online, by mail or over the phone.

You can follow the links below to find more information on the various items included in this year's tax holiday:

To view a full list of the items that are included in the sales tax holiday, along with guidelines and frequently asked questions for both consumers and retailers, click here. There is no limit on the number of items you can purchase tax-free, as long as each item qualifies.

The sales tax holiday is available to everyone, and all Virginia retailers who sell the exempt products must participate.  During the sales tax holiday, retailers may also choose to save taxpayers even more by opting to pay the sales tax themselves on items that are not exempt under the guidelines.

House Page Program
Applications for the 2017 House of Delegates page program are now open. The program, open to middle schoolers aged 13 and 14, allows students to see how the House of Delegates operate up close and personal. Pages are full-time, paid staff of the House Clerk's office. While pages are not physically attending classes while working, they have nightly study halls.

Click here to read FAQs about the House page programPages are appointed by the Speaker and must have a recommendation from their Delegate and their school's principal. A family friend, Suzannah Bozarth, was a page this last session, and I hope to see a 33rd District resident at the 2017 session. To apply, click here.

Good News from SCOTUS

I am encouraged that yesterday, the Supreme Court of the United States placed a stay on the order forcing Gloucester County Schools to let a biological girl use the boys' restroom. Hopefully the Supreme Court will take the case and reverse the Fourth Circuit's ruling. Read more here.
